The Vetted Workplace
Real hiring mistakes. Real red flags. Real fixes.
The background checks all came back clean. The court records didn't agree.
The Case
A staffing partner supplying drivers to a large multinational client had done everything that looked right — every driver came with a background check report from a previous verification provider, every report came back clean. The client relied on that paperwork to staff a role that mattered: drivers moving employees daily, with access, trust, and no room for surprises.
Then a problem surfaced. Some of the drivers already placed had undisclosed court cases — the kind of history that should have shown up on any real background check, and didn't. The reports weren't fabricated. They were just shallow: built almost entirely on Aadhaar-based identity verification, which confirms who someone is, but was never designed to surface litigation or criminal history on its own.
The staffing partner brought in a deeper verification process — one that cross-checked identity and history against a fuller set of documents, including PAN and driving license records, not Aadhaar alone. The gap closed immediately. Two years later, there hadn't been a single escalation.
The Red Flags
- Background checks that relied on a single identity document (Aadhaar) as the primary — and sometimes only — verification source
- "Clean" reports that were never cross-checked against a second or third independent record
- A high-trust, high-exposure role (daily access to employees and property) verified with the same shallow process used for low-risk roles
- No re-verification when the client's risk exposure was already significant (thousands of employees, daily transport)
- Prior reports treated as sufficient simply because they existed — not because their depth matched the role's risk
The Fix
A background check is only as deep as the documents it draws from. Aadhaar confirms identity — it was never built to surface court records, litigation history, or past conduct. Getting the fuller picture means cross-referencing multiple KYC documents — PAN, driving license, address history — against each other, not relying on any single source to carry the whole verification.
This is the kind of holistic, multi-document approach a structured verification partner like Millow.io applies by default for high-exposure roles — treating "clean" as a starting point to verify further, not an answer to stop at.
One ID document proves who someone is. It doesn't prove what they've done. The more a role touches people, property, or trust, the more documents your verification needs to actually check.
